The Tall Poppy Campaign
The Tall Poppy Campaign is a national initiative established by the Australian Institute of Policy & Science to recognise and celebrate Australian scientific and intellectual excellence and to encourage younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding achievers.
Programs
Originally a celebration of the centenary of Sir Howard Florey’s work, the campaign, launched in 1988, has expanded over the years to promote science through specific programs including:
- The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards
- The Tall Poppies Reaching Students Program
- The Tall Poppies in Community Engagement
The Tall Poppy is a metaphor for excellence and endeavour. It symbolises Australia’s pride in its outstanding achievers in all fields.
The South Australian Government has actively supported the campaign over the past four years as it both recognises the achievements of Australia’s young scientists and researchers, and through them encourages and renews interest amongst school students to study science and pursue a science-based career.
Strategic alliances
Recent strategic alliances between the Tall Poppy Campaign and other activities such as the South Australian Science Excellence Awards and National Science Week aim to raise the profile and heighten the importance of science and research in South Australia.
