About Us

The Science and Innovation Directorate has whole-of-government responsibility for:

  • Developing a coordinated and targeted approach to building a world class innovation system in South Australia
  • Strengthening the State's skill base and improving entrepreneurial skills
  • Furthering collaboration and partnering between the research sector, education institutions, and industry
  • Promoting the importance of innovation, science and technology to South Australia’s economic, environmental and social future
  • Liaising with the Commonwealth Government on science and innovation related programs.

The Directorate supports the ongoing development of South Australia’s knowledge economy by working in partnership with research and educational institutions, industry, community groups, and other government agencies to develop and implement policies and programs with particular focus on research and innovation.

The Directorate is responsible for:

  • Implementing the Constellation SA initiative, which creates a recognised network of alliances, each with its own specific focus (eg health, defence, agriculture).
  • Liaising with the Commonwealth and other State/Territory Governments on innovation, science and technology matters, including representation on a high level inter-government forum, the Commonwealth, State and Territory Advisory Council on Innovation (CSTACI).
  • Supporting the Chief Scientist for South Australia to provide independent advice to the Minister, Premier and Cabinet on matters of science, research, technology and innovation.
  • Providing secretariat services for the Premier's Science and Research Council.
